UNSW STEMM Champions Program

Maximise your impact in research, work, and the community through our STEMM Champions Program

The UNSW STEMM Champions Program is a 12-month cross-faculty program to support our women, non-binary, and gender-diverse higher degree research students and early career staff to become STEMM professionals.

Building upon the highly successful UNSW Women in Maths and Science Champions Program, this cross-faculty initiative equips participants with the skills, confidence, and networks they need to build a thriving career, and become highly visible advocates in STEMM fields.

The STEMM Champions Program is offered by UNSW Science in collaboration with UNSW Engineering and UNSW Medicine & Health.

Program benefits and outline

The program incorporates development workshops providing participants with the knowledge and confidence to maximise the impact of their engagement, their research, and their work. The workshops will focus on:

  • presentation skills
  • social media skills
  • communication skills
  • leadership development
  • career development.

The role of a UNSW STEMM Champion requires a minimum of 20 hours of outreach activities within the twelve-month program. The aim is to encourage and inspire girls, women and gender diverse people to pursue a career in STEMM. The participants will form a community of ambassadors who are fully engaged with UNSW Science, UNSW Engineering, and UNSW Medicine & Health outreach activities.

Additionally, participants in the program will undertake a strengths profile assessment, receive one-on-one career coaching sessions, and take part in cohort networking events.

Who is it for?

HDR cohort

The Higher Degree Research or HDR Cohort is for women, non-binary, and gender-diverse students enrolled in a PhD or Masters by Research in UNSW Science, UNSW Engineering, or UNSW Medicine & Health (full-time or part-time equivalent). They have aspirations for personal and professional growth and will commit to the role of UNSW STEMM Champion.

Early career staff cohort

The Early Career Staff Cohort is for women, non-binary, and gender-diverse staff who are 0–7 years post‑PhD or who hold an undergraduate STEMM degree and at least 5 years’ experience working in STEMM (excluding career interruptions). They must currently hold an academic or professional position in UNSW Science, UNSW Engineering, or UNSW Medicine & Health. They have aspirations for personal and professional growth and will commit to the role of UNSW STEMM Champion.

We strongly encourage applications from Indigenous Australians, people with disability, people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and LGBTQIA+ people.
