Seaweed Microbiome

My research project is related to seaweed microbiome especially seaweed associated bacteria. Studies showed that seaweed associated bacteria provide critical nutrient for normal morphological development of seaweed and contribute to seaweed defense and prevent undesired biofilm and colonization. Theoretically bacteria on seaweeds can be either inherited through vertical (parent to young spore) or horizontal transmission (e.g acquisition from the environment). However, information on the relative or exclusive contribution of these two processes in establishing seaweed microbiomes are less explored. Our aims are to investigate vertical transmission of bacteria and to identify the bacteria that support the growth of seaweed spore.
