From tropical to temperate: ecosystem implications in a regime shift area
There is well-known evidence of tropical herbivorous grazing on kelp forests, but the consequences of this system phase shift in the ecosystem functions and processes are unidentified. The main aim of this PhD project is to understand the changes in the ecosystem functions and processes along a tropicalisation gradient in the Solitary Islands, NSW, Australia. Specifically, this study aims to quantify the following along a tropicalisation gradient: 1) fish and benthos functional diversity, 2) plankton assemblages and their relationship with planktivorous fish, and 3) pathway and flow of detritus composition.
